Abstract

1238

Introduction: Male breast carcinoma is a rare condition. It is usually detected in advanced stage and mostly seen in older patients. 18F-FDG PET/CT is shown to be useful in staging, restaging and evaluating treatment in cancer patients. This study aims to search the efficacy of staging with FDG PET/CT in male breast cancer patients.

Methods: The male patients with breast cancer that have been referred to our department between 2015-2018 for staging with FDG PET/CT scan were evaluated retrospectively. Primary SUVmax, tumor to background ratios were calculated. Furthermore, PET/CT reports were evaluated and compared with pathology reports after surgery.

Results: Fourteen male patients with mean age of 68±11 were analysed. Twelve patients had invasive ductal and two of them had papillary type carcinoma. Nine of the patients had axillary metastases due to pathology results. Negative predictive value and positive predictive value of detecting lymph node metastases with PET/CT were 80% and 78% respectively. The highest, lowest and the average SUVmax values of primary tumour were 19,5, 1,5 and 7,3. The highest tumor to background value of primary tumor was referred to a lesion with solid papillary carcinoma (Figure 1). One of the patients has shown to have bone metastases detected in PET/CT images (Figure 2).

Conclusions: 18F-FDG PET/CT is useful and should be considered for staging male patients with breast cancer especially suspected axillary or distant metastases. Further evaluation with higher number of patients is needed for comparison with pathology results and demonstrating the impact on treatment or survival.
