Objectives: The traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD) has achieved remarkable curative effect. The objective of our study was to investigate the value of gastric emptying test (GET) in assessment of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) effect on FD.
Methods: 40 patients who were diagnosed as FD were enrolled in the study. All patients were hospitalized due to mild to moderate dyspeptic symptoms and had previously undergone routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, abdominal ultrasonography, and laboratory tests to exclude structural lesions. In addition, they were treated with TCM named Wenzhong Jianpi Decoction. Before and one month after treatment, these patients were examined using GET. The gastric half-emptying time, emptying rate and 2 hours residual rate were detected. The delayed gastric emptying (DGE) was defined as having a halftime longer than 110 minutes. The values were compared with the paired t-test and two group of related non-parameters Wilcoxon symbols test.
Results: Of the 40 patients, 31 showed DGE and 9 did not. For the 31 patients with DGE, there were significant decreases in the half-emptying time [(149.30±41.59) min vs (105.39±25.89) min, P<0.01], significant increases in the emptying rate [(0.35±0.08) %/min vs (0.46±0.14) %/min, P<0.05] and significant increases in the 2 hour residual rate [(43.36±9.287) % vs (55.71±17.09) %, P<0.05] after treatments. However, for 9 patients without DGE, there were no significant differences in the 3 indicators after the TCM treatment.
Conclusions: The gastric half-emptying time, emptying rate and 2 hours residual rate changed in the patients with DGE after TCM treatment, which indicates that the gastric emptying examination could be an effective method to assess the TCM effect on FD.
