Abstract

1064

Learning Objectives 1. To familiarize the readers with the entity of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) through case presentations. 2. To discuss the role of FDG-PET in initial staging and follow-up of IMT. 3. To present a concise review of literature pertaining to FDG-PET in IMT.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare neoplastic disease of unknown etiology. In the past, IMT was included in the generic category of “inflammatory pseudotumor” which includes both non-neoplastic and neoplastic entitites. However, IMT can be locally aggressive and may metastasize to distant sites. It is important for FDG-PET/CT readers to recognize the neoplastic nature of IMTs and the potential for metastatic disease. In our experience and based on literature reports, IMTs are typically readily imaged with FDG-PET. The increased uptake of FDG observed with IMTs may be due in part to their inflammatory components. Although large cases series are not available due to the rarity of IMT, PET appears to have a role in initial staging and follow-up of these tumors. Resection of theses tumors is the treatment of choice when possible. However, nonsurgical treatments such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and steroids are employed in the setting of incomplete surgical resections, tumor recurrence and metastatic disease. Four cases of IMT imaged with FDG-PET along with a concise review of literature will be presented
