Learning Objectives Via utilization of proper pre-imaging screening we can more accurately diagnose and then treat patients with suspected parathyroid adenomas. Imagers need to be aware of the patient history and pertinent laboratory findings before approving radionuclide parathyroid scans. We also need to be fastidious in the performance and quality control of parathyroid scans. These can be easily accomplished.
Without proper pre-imaging screening we waste valuable resources in the imaging of patients with possible parathyroid adenomas. A good team approach will yield the best results. We provide examples of exams ordered for the wrong reasons, low yield histories and lab findings. Examples of poorly performed exams and how to improve quality control are provided
