This is an excellent, concise, comprehensive, well-written book on gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), which can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract. The book presents the material in an easy-to-read pattern covering pathology, imaging, treatment, and management. The radiologic images, figures, gross and microscopic images, references, and paper quality are excellent, and the book is well worth the price.
The intended audience is oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists. However, trainees in these specialties, physician assistants, nursing personnel, and information technology personnel can also benefit.
The book is divided into 4 sections with 11 chapters, and all but one of these begin with an abstract. Section I consists of 1 chapter describing anatomic and clinical pathology. Section II, with 7 chapters, discusses the various imaging modalities for GISTs. These modalities include conventional radiography, endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound, general ultrasound, CT, MRI, and PET/CT. Section III, with 2 chapters, covers medical and surgical treatment, and section IV describes the potential for establishing a GIST Unit Network.
This book is highly recommended to individuals who manage patients with GISTs, especially individuals who are in tertiary cancer centers that have a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of GISTs and tend to manage a large number of these patients.
The authors are commended for adding this book to the literature. Recommended topics for future editions include PET/MRI and an update on immunohistochemistry and proteomics involving GISTs, not only for diagnosis but also as prognostic biomarkers.
