Since the publication of the first edition of this book, in the early days of clinical PET, PET has become an integral part of the diagnosis and treatment of patients in oncology while continuing to be applied in neurology and cardiology. Improvements in camera technology have contributed to better PET image quality, and the emergence of PET/CT has been the most significant recent advance. This second edition of the atlas has been substantially rewritten to recognize and account for PET/CT and now includes PET/CT images. PET/CT has the ability to acquire accurately registered functional and anatomic images in less than 30 min and has generally performed better than PET alone in diagnostic accuracy. Improvements in technology for PET/CT require that new skills be learned, and this timely second edition shares the experience of two of the world's leading PET centers as the technology has advanced from its formative years to become established in clinical practice. The format of the book is the same as for the first edition, with the main emphasis on oncology, mostly using 18F-FDG.
The atlas is organized into 3 parts, the first of which provides an excellent introduction to the science and practice of PET, displays normal variants, and discusses potential pitfalls. In part 2, the applications of PET/CT in oncology are covered in detail according to body system and in order of their clinical importance. Part 3 examines applications of PET/CT beyond oncology—in neuropsychiatry, cardiology, and infection. Each chapter provides clinical background information, including epidemiology, pathology, and staging, and lists the key management issues followed by clinical cases. In addition, each chapter concludes with a summary of the clinical indications for PET/CT and a set of references for further reading about the topic.
The presentation format is a series of mini lectures carefully designed for rapid assimilation, with case histories in which more than 800 high-quality illustrations are supplemented by clear and concise key teaching points that are highlighted for the readers. This edition includes an interactive DVD with a selection of 30 clinical PET/CT case studies that can be displayed and analyzed with the included HERMES RAPID software.
This second edition of Atlas of Clinical Positron Emission Tomography is an invaluable resource for nuclear physicians, radiologists, and oncologists, both those in training and those in practice.
