Shared polygenic risk and causal inferences in Parkinson's disease
2022, Brain DisordersEffect of body mass index on insulin secretion or sensitivity and diabetes
2015, American Journal of Preventive MedicineCitation Excerpt :These associations were observed in both sexes. Previous studies9,19 have demonstrated an association between underweight and a mild reduction in fasting insulin; underweight individuals have lower insulin secretion than people with BMI<23.0. The primary mechanisms contributing to deterioration in insulin secretion are glucose toxicity, genetic variants, and increased cell damage with age.
Age differences in the risk of diabetes incidence according to body mass index level in Japanese women: BMI and diabetes in women
2013, Obesity Research and Clinical PracticeCitation Excerpt :First, there are genetic factors that are associated with diabetes, and some of these genes were found among those with a low BMI [20,21]. Second, being underweight is associated with a mild reduction in fasting insulin and persons with underweight have poorer insulin secretion than persons with normal weight [22,23]. Third, underweight Japanese have a higher body fat percentage compared with underweight Caucasians, and thus lower muscle mass available for metabolizing glucose [24].
Normal protein anabolic response to hyperaminoacidemia in insulin-resistant patients with lung cancer cachexia
2012, Clinical NutritionCitation Excerpt :NSCLC patients receiving the same insulin infusion rates as controls reached a lesser hyperinsulinemia. Weight-losing patients have shown hypoinsulinemic responses to oral glucose,61 IV glucose62 and during the hyperinsulinemic clamp.54,63 In this study, deficient endogenous insulin secretion is unlikely the cause, as C-peptide was suppressed equally.
Increased postabsorptive and exercise-induced whole-body glucose production in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
2011, Metabolism: Clinical and ExperimentalCitation Excerpt :Potential mechanisms underlying decreased insulin sensitivity in these patients include BW [24], the presence of low-grade systemic inflammation [24], and hypoxemia [25]. Regarding the observed duality in insulin sensitivity in underweight and normal-weight COPD patients, it is important to notice that being underweight is also associated with increased insulin sensitivity in healthy subjects [26]; so this is not a unique feature in COPD. However, it is remarkable that insulin sensitivity was increased in underweight patients characterized by elevated levels of circulating catecholamines because it is known that epinephrine induces hyperglycemia and peripheral insulin resistance in vivo [27].
