Photodynamic therapy is used in the treatment of cancer followed by activation of the chemical by light [5,6]. Among the various reported works concerning metal phthalocyanines in photodynamic therapy, relatively a few studies were done on metal free phthalocyanines despite the potential use of these compounds as nonlinear optical materials.

In terms of the ionisation pattern discussed above, compound 2d, being potentially tricationic (Fig. 2), exhibits one which has been shown to be active by several groups [19,20]. Thus the molecule has recognisable lipophilic and hydrophilic regions which may aid in orientation in membranous regions in the microbial cell.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used in the treatment of cancer and consists of the administration of a photosensitizing chemical followed by activation of the chemical by light.
