There are various node related factors that have been studied including extra capsular spread, number, size as well as ipsilateral versus contra lateral involvement and level of the metastatic adenopathy [1–10]. The volume of the metastatic adenopathy is another parameter that is the subject of current research in terms of its influence on loco regional control and survival.

Disease control of involved lymph nodes by radiotherapy decreases with increasing maximum lymph node diameter [10–12]. Only a limited number of reports analysed 3D-CT lymph node volumes and found that total nodal volume was a significant prognostic factor for regional control [13–16].
