2001, Current Problems in SurgeryCitation Excerpt :It is likely that the induction of a mutation in somatic cells is a critical event in the initiation of cancer. Recently, a close qualitative relationship has been established between mutagenesis and carcinogenesis; therefore, bile acids under certain conditions may act as a carcinogen.74,75 At the molecular level, bile acids have been shown to activate protein kinase C and induce transcription of the cyclo-oxygenase-2 gene.76-78
