TABLE 1

Methodology for Esophagogastrointestinal Transit Study

ParameterMethodology
Esophageal transit111In-DTPA, 3.7 MBq, in 15 mL of water
0.5-s frames × 60
Transit quantification (percentage of counts 10 s after maximum counts)
Liquid-only gastric emptying111In-DTPA, 3.7 MBq, in 300 mL of water
1-min frames × 60, in left anterior oblique view
Transit quantification (half-time of emptying and fitted half-time)
Combined liquid/solid gastric emptying111In-DTPA, 3.7 MBq, in 120 mL of water and consensus standardized egg-white solid meal ingested over 10–15 min
1.0-min anterior and posterior images immediately and 1, 2, 3, and 4 h after meal ingestion
Transit quantification (liquid: percentage emptying at 1, 2, 3, and 4 h and emptying half-time; first-hour value used)
Solid gastric emptyingProtocol of Tougas et al. (19); 74 MBq of 99mTc-sulfur colloid–labeled egg-white meal; geometric mean attenuation correction and percentage emptying at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 h
Small-intestinal transit index1-min anterior and posterior images on 111In photopeaks at 5 and 6 h; geometric mean attenuation correction; quantification at 6 h (percentage activity reaching region of ileocecal valve and beyond)
Large-intestinal transit5-min anterior and posterior images on 111In photopeaks acquired in morning at 24, 48, and 72 h; geometric mean attenuation correction
Transit quantification (percentage activity present at 6 h that transits out of body at 24, 48, and 72 h; visual description of extent of transit at each time interval
  • Patients are instructed to fast overnight before examination and not to eat or drink anything further on day 1. Normal eating can resume on days 2, 3, and 4. Laxatives are prohibited on examination days until completed.
