  • * Malignant diagnosis was confirmed by tissue biopsies or bone marrow examination in 36 of these 39 patients before selection of cancer treatment strategy. The tissues biopsies or bone marrow examinations were obtained either in the DOC workup before referral (n = 13) or after referral from DOC.

  • Hepatitis C = hepatitis C RNA and antibody positive; pharyngitis = positive throat culture; HIV = antigen/antibody test positive; pneumonia = positive sputum culture; urinary tract infection = positive urinary culture; gastroenteritis = fecal swap polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive for Clostridium difficile 027; and diverticulitis = clinical picture combined with CT of abdomen.
