This study compared the early 18F-florapronol PET with 18F-FDG PET between healthy controls (HC) and AD (Alzheimer’s dementia) patients. 18F-FDG PET image reflects glucose metabolism and is coupled with perfusion in the brain. Therefore, we investigated the correlation between 18F-florapronol PET and 18F-FDG PET images. Methods: A total of 29 subjects (15 HC and 14 AD subjects) underwent 18F-florapronol PET and 18F-FDG PET. 18F-FDG PET image was acquired from 30 to 60 min and 18F-florapronol PET for 0 to 10 min. 18F-florapronol and 18F-FDG images were spatially normalized with transformation matrices obtained from individual CT images and SUVR from cerebellum area and global mean were calculated using PMOD 3.6 (PNEURO and PFUSION). Pearson's correlation coefficients between 18F-FDG and early 18F-florapronol for predefined cortical brain regions (Frontal cortex, Temporal cortex, Parietal cortex, Occipital cortex, Striatum, Antertior cingulate, Posterior cingulate, and Cerebral white matter) were calculated using MedCalc (version 18.11). Results: We calculated the average within-subject correlation coefficient R of SUVR as 0.81 ± 0.09 in HC, 0.79 ± 0.20 in AD, 0.80 ± 0.15 in total with global mean normalization and as 0.85 ± 0.06 in HC, 0.79 ± 0.20 in AD, 0.82 ± 0.15 in total with cerebellum normalization between 18F-florapronol and 18F-FDG (Table 1). We compared the 18F-FDG and 18F-florapronol for SUVR of specific region in global mean normalization and cerebellum normalization, most of the correlation coefficient were higher in global mean normalization (Table 2). In global mean normalization, the SUVR of HC was higher than AD. The regions with the highest correlation coefficients in HC were frontal cortex and posterior cingulate (r = 0.97). The region with the highest correlation coefficient in AD was parietal cortex (r = 0.77) (Table 3). Conclusions: Early 18F-florapronol images well correlated with 18F-FDG PET images and may reflect glucose metabolism to diagnose AD. Therefore, 18F-florapronol may be used as a single radiotracer to diagnose AD additionally with dual phase amyloid PET.View this table:TABLE1.
