We tested the utility of verapamil and heparin in suppressing myocardial uptake in a rat model. Methods Thirty-one male Wistar rats were divided into four groups randomly: sham, ischemia only, ischemia plus verapamil and ischemia plus heparin. Myocardial ischemia was induced by ligation of left anterior descending for 25min. Verapamil was injected 1 h prior to FDG administration at a dose of 1 mg/kg, and heparin was injected 15min prior to FDG administration at a dose of 5 U/kg. PET/CT scans were performed 60 min after injection of 18F-FDG. Results In non-ischemia zone, neither verapamil nor heparin induced significant reduction of FDG uptake (SUVmax 0.82±0.19 and 0.91±0.31; p=NS). Contrarily, both verapamil and heparin significantly suppressed myocardial FDG uptakein ischemia zone (ischemia only, 1.01±0.25; ischemia plus verapamil, 0.97±0.12; ischemia plus heparin 0.91±0.12 vs; all p<0.05). Conclusion In rat model of myocardial ischemia, verapamil and heparin have similar effect on myocardial FDG uptake, only in ischemic area but not non-ischemic zone.
