The prototype blocks with dimensions of 2.76 mm x 2.59 mm x 18 mm (7 x 8 array) were built using 4 square SiPMs. The SiPMs used in this work were Sensl C series, which provided good timing resolution and ultra-low noise. We used special circuit to reduce the dead time of SiPM signal to get good performance at high count rate. By implementing new design, materials and techniques, testing the detectors response and, measuring the timing resolution, we can optimize detector performance. List-mode data were acquired using Ga-68 source with UIH high yield pileup-event recovery (HYPER) electronics and data acquisition software. Results A typical block is presented in this study. This block has a packing fraction of 95%. All 56 crystal detectors are clearly decoded, peak-to-valley ratio of 2.7, energy resolution of 11.7% at 511 keV. Average coincidence timing resolution (CRT) of 484-ps (FWHM) was achieved by crystal to crystal. Conclusions This new block design shows the feasibility of high resolution PET-CT and PET-MR detector ring using the lower cost SiPM as an alternative to the more expensive position sensitive PMTs.
