Currently, there are no published guidelines addressing specific monitor resolution for diagnostic interpretation of basic nuclear medicine scans. This study would increase confidence of offsite Nuclear Medicine physicians to provide comparable interpretation of common emergent NM studies using standard home monitors on call versus PACS high resolution workstations located at imaging centers or hospitals. Methods This is a retrospective, single site, randomized study where three board-certified nuclear medicine physicians were included. Each imager, independently interpreted specific NM emergent scans on high-resolution LCD PACS monitors as well as standard resolution monitors. The investigation included: 45 patients with NM Brain imaging, 25 patients with NM Biliary Patency, 25 patients with NM Pulmonary Ventilation Perfusion imaging and 25 patients with NM GI Bleed scans. Subsequently, interpretive results of each nuclear medicine physician for each patient were compared to evaluate for intra-observer reliability between higher and lower resolution monitors. Results There was only negligible intra-observer variability between high resolution PACS radiology workstations and standard monitors. Of significance, for all 3 board certified nuclear medicine physicians interpreting the studies, there were no instances of missed positive findings on standard monitors. Conclusions This study indicates that lower resolution standard monitors display adequate NM images to accurately interpret emergent studies when immediate interpretation is required. %U
