We aimed to evaluate the relationships between proliferation metabolic tumor volumes of FLT PET/CT and prognostic factors in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients, and compared the results with those using FDG PET/CT.Methods A total of 30 patients were enrolled and underwent both FLT and FDG PET/CT scans, then underwent standard esophagectomy in accordance with the McKeown method, and three-field lymph node dissection was also performed, if demonstrated. Maximum standard uptake value (SUV(max)) and metabolic tumor volume (MTV) were recorded. Two-tailed Spearman's correlation was used to analyse the relationships between the metabolic parameters and the prognostic factors. Survival curves were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Prognostic significance of MTV, SUVmax, and other clinicopathological variables such as sex, age, disease length, site and stage, was assessed by univariate and multivariate analyses using Cox proportional hazards regression model. Results At last follow-up at 2014 September, the median follow-up time was 51.5 months (22 ~ 78 months), there were 10 patients survival without disease relapse, all of them could participate in light labor, and, there were 20 patients death. Positive correlations were observed between both FLT and FDG SUVmax, MTV and UICC stage, P value are 0.006, 0.045, 0.030. 0.038 and 0.013, respectively. FLT MTV and UICC stage were independent variables that significantly affected the prognosis, P value is 0.034 and 0.025, respectively. Conclusions Both tracer MTVs were positively correlated with prognosis. Our findings may suggest it should pay close attention to those patients with high FLT MTV.Research Support Supported by Natural Science Foundation of China for the Youth, No.81101699; Shandong Province Natural Science Foundation,No.ZR2011HL059; Shandong Medical and Health Science and Technology Development Plan,No.2013WSA18002 ER -
