Learning Objectives 1. Highlight the advantages of bone PET/CT. 2. Comparison of bone PET/CT to other bone imaging modalities. 3. Overview of old and new diagnostic imaging patterns. 4. How to differentiate degenerative disease vs metastases with NaF18. 5. Identification of lytic metastatic lesions. 6. This educational review will help to provide a higher qualitative interpretation of NaF18 bone PET/CT images.
Data suggests that bone NaF18-PET/CT imaging provides improved resolution and significantly higher sensitivity than conventional bone imaging; and that the latter could be replaced by the former in the near future. However, the introduction of NaF18-PET/CT also introduces potential problems like potential false positives due to its much higher sensitivity and need for validation of reproducibility of the ‘classical signs’ described with conventional bone imaging. We consider it very important to become educated on NaF18-PET/CT and ‘learn again’ how to read bone scan imaging before its clinical widespread, and if needed develop new signs and patterns based on the new findings
