Learning Objectives 1. To understand the technique of Indium-111 labeled white blood cell scintigraphy. 2. To learn the normal biodistribution, pitfalls and limitations of Indium-111 white cell scanning. 3. To be able to recognize the abnormal biodistribution patterns of extraskeletal inflammatory and infectious conditions.
Radiolabeled leukocyte imaging is the current nuclear medicine gold standard for the investigation of infection. This technique is effective for the detection and localization of both clinically apparent and occult extraskeletal inflammatory and infectious conditions. In this pictorial review, we will outline the technique of Indium-111 labeled white blood cell (111In WBC) scintigraphy, discuss the normal distribution and give examples of pathological accumulation in patients with proven extraskeletal infection with plain film, CT and MR correlation where appropriate. Indium 111-labeled leukocyte imaging is an effective technique for the detection and evaluation of both clinically apparent and occult extraskeletal inflammatory and infectious conditions
