Objectives Structured reporting (SR) systems may have several benefits compared to conventional reporting. To our knowledge, no such commercial or academic SR software exists for PET-CT studies.
Methods Several prototypes representing different user interface ideas were designed, implemented and field tested. In order to achieve maximum usability, various user-centered design principles and techniques were evaluated and applied.
Results Our system is completely language and modality independent, it has a flexible text macro system, and it contains a built-in gamut list for easy navigation and decision support. Teaching file creation and export is also supported. The software can be smoothly integrated with any image processing application. Our integrated version automatically creates a database of semantically tagged ROI measurement data, thus enabling direct computation of likelihood ratios and estimation of post-test probabilities for certain lesion types.
Conclusions We have designed, implemented and tested a highly useable, general purpose, point-n-click SR software. Our solution provides decision support directly integrated in the workflow facilitating the creation of high quality reports. Academic research and education activities are also supported by the software
