Objectives To examine the relationship between Glut-1, 3, 4 expression and 18F-FDG uptake in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients.
Methods Fifty four patients with PTC were included in this study. The patients were consisted of 15 male and 39 female. 18F-FDG PET was done before operation. Immunohistochemistry were done using postoperative histopathlogical specimen. We have investigated the correlation between Glut-1, 3, 4 expression and SUV max, the relationship between T stage and Glut-1, 3, 4 expression or SUV max and the relationship between lymph node metastases positive [ly (+)] and Glut-1, 3, 4 expression or SUV max.
Results Glut-4 expression were correlated with SUV max significantly, however, Glut-1, 3 were not [Glut-4; r = 0.416; p = 0.003, Glut-1; r = 0.161; p = 0.273, Glut-3: r = 0.178; p = 0.227]. There were no significant difference between T stage and SUV max or Glut-1, 3, 4 expression. Both SUV max and Glut-4 expression were related with ly (+) significantly [SUV max; p = 0.04, Glut-4; p = 0.02], however, Glut-1, 3 were not [Glut-1: p = 0.35, Glut-3; p = 0.59].
Conclusions GLUT-4 may participate in the 18FDG uptake in PTC rather than GLUT-1, 3. GLUT-4 expression may be related to the incidence of lymph node metastases in PTC.
