The sentinel node is the lymph node that receives direct drainage from a primary lesion. After diagnostic biopsy, lymphoscintigraphy is performed on most patients with cutaneous melanoma to identify the sentinel node and differentiate it from nonsentinel, second- or third-tier nodes of the same lymphatic basin.
