ABSTRACT
We have investigated the persistence of chromosomal aberrations in Chinese hamster thyroid cells after administering 0.011 µc of 131I to animals 710 days old. At 30 days and at 1 yr after injection, the thyroids were removed, trypsinized, and the cells grown in tissue culture for 3 days. The cells were arrested in metaphase, fixed, and stained for chromosomal analysis.
Chromosomal damage varied with the dose. There was a marked decrease in the percentage of aberrant cells found at 1 yr as compared to the 30-day value. At all dose levels, the percentage of thyroid cells containing aberrations was several times greater than the control values. Some of the thyroid cells damaged soon after birth may persist for the animal's lifetime.
