ABSTRACT
The use of free 99mTc-pertechnetate ion for placental localization was evaluated in 18 patients in the third trimester of pregnancy. Unequivocal localization and imaging of the placenta was performed with 300 µCi99mTc within five minutes after injection of the pertechnetate bolus. This rapid and precise localization of the placenta is accomplished through use of the Anger-type scintillation camera to image the initial vascular distribution of the pertechnetate bolus in the placenta. Fetal radiation is very low, i.e., 5 mr or less.
