Polyploidization and Aberration of Human Chromosomes Induced in vitro and in vivo with Ionizing Radiations3

Carlos E. Nasjleti, D.D.S.2, James M. Walden, D.D.S.1 and Herbert H. Spencer, M.D.3

Ann Arbor, Michigan

ABSTRACT

1. The occurrence of polyploidy and endoreduplication is increased in leukocytes following irradiation in vitro and in vivo. The occurrence of structural chromosomal abnormalities is again documented.
2. The radiations of 131I, cobalt-60 and x-rays have similar qualitative effects as measured by leukocyte cultures.
3. Information as to how long chromosomal damage will persist after irradiation is not as yet available and in one individual who had received 131I therapy shortly before our studies, no evidence of damage was seen.
4. Recent literature on polyploidization of chromosomes is presented and discussed.
