A Comparison of Iodine-125 and Iodine-131 as Tracers in the Diagnosis of Thyroid Disease. II. Clinical Aspects^1,3,

ABSTRACT

1. Results of 229 tracer studies with ¹²⁵I were compared with the results of the same number of studies with iodine-131. Twenty patients were given a mixed dose of ¹²⁵I + ¹³¹I. There was no significant difference in the results, providing appropriate standards are used.

2. This lack of difference in the metabolism of the two isotopes of iodine by the thyroid, indicates that there is no isotope effect involved.

3. Thyroid scans and thyroid metastases scans with ¹²⁵I show better resolution, localization and lower backgrounds than with iodine-131.
