ABSTRACT
This study analyzes the transport characteristics of thepertechnetate anion across membranes of human erythrocytesduring labeling with technetium-99m (99mTc).Transport of this anion is inhibited after incubation at lowtemperature, indicating the involvement of a process withhigh activation energy. Transport is also decreased by twowell-known inhibitors of the band-3 anion transport systemand is not affected by inhibition of the Na/K/Cl co-transportsystem. From these results we conclude that, in the processof labeling red blood cells with 99mTc, the pertechnetateanion may reach the interior of the erythrocyte through theband-3 anion transport system.
