ABSTRACT
This report describes a technique designed for performing Xe-133 ventilation studies in subjects supported by respirator-driven ventilation. The technique uses a standard respirator and a simple Xe-133 delivery box much as a standard bag-box ventilation system is used. Reproducible quantitative measurements of lung ventilation were obtained using this technique in experimental animals, without radioactive contamination of the respirator unit. Although the technique has not been tested in humans, the principle should be applicable to the performance of Xe-133 studies in human subjects on artificial ventilation.
