ABSTRACT

The results of radioimmunoassay for serum thyroxine levels have been compared with conventional saturation analysis techniques in normal euthyroid subjects, patients with thyroid dysfunction, and pregnant women. The results were equivalent except in the hyperthyroid patients in whom the mean values with radioimmunoassay were about 50% higher than with competitive protein-binding assay (CBPA). This difference may be of practical value for differentiating between hyperthyroidism and hyperestrogenism in patients with elevated serum thyroxine levels.
