ABSTRACT
It is shown that the wavelength at which the modulation transfer function of a focused collimator should be assessed is that at which MTF(
)/
is a maximum. This wavelength is called the comparative optimum response wavelength, and the value of the modulation transfer function at this wavelength is called the index of modulation.
To compare the designs of two collimators with plane sensitivities E1 and E2 and indices of modulation MTF(
1) and MTF(
2), respectively, E1[MTF(
1)]2 should be compared with
